US-Russia Diplomats Discuss New Ideas for Ukraine Resolution Amid Ongoing Conflict

Top diplomats from Russia and the United States engaged in a «candid dialogue» during discussions in Malaysia on Thursday, according to Moscow, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclosed that his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, proposed a «new idea» regarding the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

This meeting occurred on the margins of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers’ summit in Kuala Lumpur, shortly after Russia launched a new wave of strikes on Kyiv, resulting in two fatalities.

In spite of the intensified attacks, Moscow refuted claims that peace talks with Kyiv had stalled.

«A constructive and candid exchange of opinions regarding the resolution of the situation in Ukraine took place,» stated the Russian Foreign Ministry following the discussions.

Rubio informed journalists that Lavrov had introduced something «new» pertaining to the conflict, although he refrained from providing specifics.

«It’s not an entirely new strategy. It represents a new idea or concept that I will present to the president for further discussion,» he mentioned. Rubio also noted that while it might not immediately lead to peace, it could potentially pave the way for future negotiations.

Moscow did not elaborate on the specifics of this idea.

Rubio also mentioned that he expressed President Trump’s frustration over the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

«I conveyed the president’s disappointment and frustration regarding the lack of progress,» Rubio stated.

Earlier this week, Trump accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of making «a lot of nonsense» in relation to peace discussions on Ukraine, and committed to sending additional American weaponry to Kyiv.

While the U.S. president has increasingly criticized Putin, he has also expressed discontent with Kyiv as aspirations for a swift resolution to Europe’s most lethal conflict since World War II diminish.

The last meeting between Rubio and Lavrov occurred in February in Saudi Arabia, coinciding with the Trump administration’s efforts to repair relations with Moscow and initiate peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The two diplomats have also communicated by phone several times in recent months.

Following the summit in Malaysia, Lavrov is slated to travel to North Korea this weekend, marking the latest in a series of high-level visits as Moscow and Pyongyang enhance their military collaboration.
