Ukrainian Drone Assault in Voronezh Results in 22 Casualties as Tensions Escalate

A drone assault by Ukraine on the southern city of Voronezh early Tuesday morning left at least 22 individuals injured, according to local authorities. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that dozens of drones were destroyed overnight across various regions.

Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Voronezh region, confirmed that one of the injured was a teenager, with a total of 17 people requiring hospitalization.

“The majority of injuries resulted from shrapnel and glass fragments, but there were different types of wounds present,” Gusev shared on Telegram. “Some injuries are quite severe: one individual is in a coma while another has suffered lung damage.”

Additionally, he mentioned, «Another woman from a nearby rural area was taken to a hospital in Voronezh with a shoulder wound from shrapnel.»

Images released by local media depicted shattered windows in both an office and a retail store, with glass littering the streets. A video showed a drone exploding into flames as it collided with a building in the city center.

“It was terrifying. I couldn’t sleep at all from 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning. I’ve never heard so many explosions; they felt apocalyptic,” Veronika, a 27-year-old graduate student visiting her parents in Voronezh for the summer, told The Moscow Times.

Veronika added, «I noticed that when the first reports of the attack came out, nobody was blaming Ukrainians in the comments. But by 10 a.m., bots began to flood the comment sections, demanding things like ‘Zelensky should be hanged!’ and calling for retaliation.»

She believes that most residents of Voronezh hold the inadequacy of Russian air defenses, which failed to intercept the drones, responsible for the damages. Furthermore, she highlighted the ongoing mobile internet outages in the city center, which officials have connected to counter-drone operations.

Karina, a 24-year-old resident of Voronezh, expressed her frustration about the exaggerated fears shown by her friends regarding the attack.

“No one died! Why is everyone behaving as though this drone strike was unexpected? We receive SMS alerts about potential attacks almost daily, and the air defenses are always active,” she remarked.

“People ask me if I’m scared to live in this city. But I don’t believe a drone would ever hit my home,” Karina stated.

Although Voronezh has faced multiple attacks from Ukrainian forces since the onset of Russia’s large-scale invasion, it has experienced these incidents less frequently compared to other significant border cities like Kursk and Belgorod.

Earlier reports from Russia’s Defense Ministry indicated the destruction of 55 Ukrainian drones overnight, primarily in the southwestern Belgorod region and Voronezh.

In Ukraine, a child was reported injured due to a Russian strike on a «medical facility» in the northeastern Sumy region, according to local officials.

These assaults occurred just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal with NATO for the provision of American air defense systems and weaponry to Ukraine, in light of growing frustration in Washington over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire and the escalation of airstrikes.
