Trumps Claims on WWII Face Backlash from Russian Officials: A Historical Misstep?

Russian officials have accused U.S. President Donald Trump of overstating America’s contribution to World War II, with high-ranking figures labeling his comments as historically flawed and self-serving.

Last week, Trump stated on Truth Social that the U.S. made the largest contribution to the Allied victory, minimizing the significant sacrifices made by European nations. He noted, “While many of our allies observe May 8th as Victory Day, we played a far greater role than any other country in achieving victory in World War II.” Trump proposed to rename Veterans Day on November 11 to WWII Victory Day.

“We emerged victorious in both wars, and no one matched us in terms of might, bravery, or military genius, yet we rarely celebrate our accomplishments,” he added. “It’s time to start honoring our victories again!”

These statements prompted backlash in Russia, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany on May 9. President Vladimir Putin has frequently accused Western nations of attempting to “rewrite” the war’s history.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, was among the first to respond to Trump’s assertions, labeling them as “pretentious nonsense” and highlighting that the Soviet Union suffered 27 million casualties during the conflict. He emphasized on social media, “Victory Day belongs to us, and it is May 9.”

On Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova supported Medvedev’s criticism, telling the state-run Sputnik news outlet that Trump’s comments illustrated his characteristic exaggeration.

“It’s evident that he has consistently exaggerated everything—be it as a person, a politician, or a businessman,” she remarked. “He doesn’t conceal it; he embraces it. His wealth and political success are rooted in inflated sentiments.”

During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Putin stated that Russia and Israel were dedicated to “upholding the truth about the events of World War II,” as reported by the Kremlin.

Putin has long leveraged WWII history to foster a sense of patriotic unity in Russia, portraying the contemporary Russian military as the successor to the Soviet Red Army and justifying the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a fight against “Nazism.”
