Tesla Launches Driverless Taxi Service in Austin: A New Era of Autonomous Transportation Begins

Tesla has launched a driverless taxi service, with test rides currently taking place in Austin.

The initial passengers were carefully selected, including investors and influencers who are broadcasting their experiences live. Each vehicle is accompanied by a company staff member to monitor the situation.

Passenger Herbert Ong remarked on the vehicle’s high speed and its autonomous parking capabilities.

Another user named Zack praised the smoothness of the ride.

Based on videos shared on social media, the test went well: the driverless Model Y SUVs navigated short distances, intersections, avoided pedestrians, and parked themselves, including during nighttime rides.

However, there were a few hiccups. In one instance, a streamer pressed the stop button, but the car only briefly slowed down on the road before continuing to move.

Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, praised the software and chip development teams for the successful rollout, emphasizing that all solutions were built from the ground up.

A fixed fare of $4.20 is being charged to the first passengers per trip. The Robotaxi service operates from 6 AM to midnight within city limits, though it may not function in adverse weather conditions.

It remains unclear when these self-driving vehicles will be available to the general public. Musk has stated plans to expand the initiative to other cities in the near future.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that in May, autonomous vehicles began testing as public transport in Germany. source
