Sky Taxis Set to Soar in Dubai as Joby Aviation Completes Initial Test Flights

Joby Aviation, the manufacturer of flying air taxis, has delivered its first aircraft to the UAE and completed initial pilot tests. The launch of the service in the region is anticipated in 2026.

The company specializes in creating electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

“Our flights and operational presence in Dubai mark a monumental step towards integrating air taxi services into everyday life around the globe,” stated JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO.

He referred to the UAE as a «launchpad for a global revolution in mobility.»

In February 2024, Joby Aviation announced plans to introduce its service in the UAE as part of an agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, granting it exclusive rights to operate air taxi services in the emirate for a duration of six years.

In November, the company began constructing a vertiport—launch and landing area for eVTOLs—at Dubai International Airport, with aims to cover three new locations: Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Downtown, and Marina.

In 2024, Joby Aviation also entered into an agreement to launch air taxi services with three governmental departments in Abu Dhabi.

The company’s stock has risen over 32% since the start of the year, increasing its market capitalization to above $9 billion. Following the announcement, shares gained 12%.

It’s worth noting that in June, Tesla launched a driverless taxi service with test rides taking place in Austin, Texas.

The company is currently facing an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concerning possible violations of rules by its autonomous vehicles.
