Security Talks: Russian Official Shoigu Meets Kim Jong Un Amid Strengthening Ties

Sergei Shoigu, the chief security official of Moscow, arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday for discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to Russian media outlets.

Shoigu, who serves as the Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, made the trip upon the direction of President Vladimir Putin, as reported by the state-operated TASS news agency. RIA Novosti indicated that current events, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine, are expected to be part of the discussions.

This visit marks Shoigu’s second trip to Pyongyang in under three months.

In recent years, Russia and North Korea have strengthened their ties, with North Korea reportedly sending troops and military equipment to assist Russia in its conflict in Ukraine.

On Monday, Pyongyang defended its military collaboration with Russia, stating that the relationship aims to «ensure peace and stability» across Europe and Asia.

According to South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, referencing intelligence reports, approximately 600 North Korean soldiers have died and thousands have been injured while fighting for Russia.

Last year, Russia and North Korea established a comprehensive military agreement, which included a mutual defense arrangement during a rare trip by Putin to the nuclear-capable nation.

Shoigu’s previous visit to Pyongyang took place in March, when he proclaimed the agreement as “fully aligned with the interests of both nations.”
