Russian Travel Agencies Market $3,000 Tours to Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule

Russian travel agencies have begun promoting travel packages to Afghanistan, offering week-long trips for approximately $3,000, coinciding with Moscow’s strengthening ties to the Taliban-led administration in Kabul.

Recently introduced on various Russian online platforms, these packages promise organized excursions to Afghanistan for Russian tourists, with the initial group scheduled to set off as soon as mid-July, according to the Telegram news outlet Shot.

These travel offers, priced at 235,000 rubles (about $3,000), have emerged alongside Russia’s increasingly cordial relationship with the Taliban, which has ruled Afghanistan since the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021.

Last week, Russia became the first nation to formally acknowledge the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, governed by the Taliban.

Following this recognition, Russia announced its intent to collaborate with the Taliban across multiple sectors, including energy, agriculture, transportation, and infrastructure.

Officials have also explored expanding trade and investment avenues, despite ongoing international sanctions on the Taliban authorities.

The head of Russia’s civil aviation agency recently indicated that direct commercial flights between Afghanistan and Russia might soon be introduced, further facilitating the normalization of relations between the two nations.

Since regaining control, the Taliban has implemented a strict interpretation of Islamic law, resulting in severe restrictions on women’s rights, public executions, corporal punishment, and the closure of most girls’ schools.

The United Nations and various human rights organizations have condemned these actions as systemic violations of international human rights standards.

Moscow has expressed its commitment to supporting Kabul through joint initiatives aimed at enhancing regional security and combating terrorism and drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Western governments continue to discourage all travel to Afghanistan, citing ongoing threats from militant groups, inadequate infrastructure, and the lack of consular support.

Russian authorities have yet to make any public statements regarding the safety of these tours or if the government will oversee or assist citizens traveling to Afghanistan.
