Russia Claims Control Over Two More Villages Amid Continued Hostilities in Ukraine

On Saturday, Russia announced that it had seized control of two villages in Eastern and Southern Ukraine, continuing its offensive amid faltering ceasefire negotiations led by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Russian defense ministry reported that its troops had taken the village of Shchebraki in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and Panteleimonivka in the eastern Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the other hand, stated that Russia launched over 170 drones into Ukraine overnight, hitting various locations in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytskyi regions.

He indicated that four individuals were killed in Dnipro when a drone strike targeted a hotel complex, resulting in 21 injuries, among them a pregnant woman.

«Russia is making a mockery of global peacekeeping efforts. It prolongs the conflict and instills fear as it perceives no significant repercussions,» Zelensky commented.

Russian attacks in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region on Saturday resulted in one fatality and left 14 others injured, according to regional governor Oleg Sinegubov.

For several weeks, the United States has been working to broker a ceasefire in the Black Sea and to address strikes on energy infrastructure affecting both nations, engaging with Moscow and Kyiv.

Although both nations have theoretically agreed to these ceasefires, the practicalities of their enforcement remain uncertain, with each side accusing the other of attempts to thwart the agreements.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the establishment of a «transitional administration» for Ukraine under UN auspices, a proposal that would entail Zelensky stepping down prior to any peace negotiations being finalized.
