Roblox Brings Back Iconic Oof Sound Effect Amid Licensing Challenges

In Roblox, it was recently announced that the beloved “oof” sound effect, used to signify character deaths in games on the platform, is making a comeback. This comes three years after the sound was removed due to licensing issues.

In July 2022, Roblox was forced to eliminate the iconic death sound due to copyright concerns. The rights to the sound effect belong to composer Tommy Tallarico, who originally created it for the 2000 game Messiah. Tallarico had an agreement with Roblox developers that stipulated a payment of $1 or 100 in-game currency units for each player who utilized the effect in their projects on the platform. It’s likely that the agreement expired, and developers were unable to renew their collaboration regarding this sound content, leading to its replacement.
