Putin Engages in Diplomatic Dialogue with Pope Leo Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Pope Leo over the phone about the ongoing war in Ukraine, expressing his desire for peace through diplomatic channels, according to the Kremlin.

However, Putin also asserted that «the Kyiv regime is relying on escalating the conflict and executing sabotage against civilian infrastructure within Russian territory,» as stated in a release from the Kremlin.

He «reiterated his commitment to achieving peace through political and diplomatic avenues,» with the Kremlin characterizing the conversation as «constructive.»

Putin emphasized that a final, fair, and comprehensive resolution to the crisis would require addressing the underlying issues.

This language typically refers to a set of extensive demands from Russia, which includes restricting Ukraine’s military capabilities, preventing it from joining NATO, and making significant territorial concessions.

Ukraine has dismissed these demands, insisting on an unconditional ceasefire, which Russia has rejected.

Recently, Ukraine has conducted multiple attacks on Russian territory, including bold strikes on warplanes stationed at Russian airfields.

On Monday, Russia and Ukraine exchanged proposals for ending their three-year conflict during discussions in Istanbul.

In February 2022, Russia initiated a large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Reports indicate that Leo is open to hosting peace negotiations between the two nations.

Putin expressed gratitude to Leo for «his readiness to aid in resolving» the conflict, according to the Kremlin’s statement.
