Ovechkin Advocates for Russian Athletes Return to International Sports Amid Celebratory Homecoming

Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, has advocated for the reinstatement of Russian athletes in major international competitions. This statement came as he was warmly welcomed by hundreds of enthusiastic fans during his visit to Moscow on Saturday.

The Washington Capitals’ star received an exuberant welcome during his first visit back home since he scored his 895th goal last April, surpassing the long-held record of Canadian hockey icon Wayne Gretzky.

«I am hopeful that soon we will be permitted to compete, and that our athletes will once again take part in the Olympics and world championships to represent our nation,» the hockey legend shared with AFP.

Accompanied by numerous journalists and thrilled fans, he traversed a fashionable Moscow street adorned with «Ovechkin 8» jerseys and banners proclaiming «eternal record.»

Russians have experienced limited opportunities to celebrate accomplishments in international sports over the past three years, having been barred from numerous events due to the conflict in Ukraine initiated by the Kremlin.

However, Ovechkin’s achievement gave them a rare moment of joy.

Fans queued for autographs at a seasonal outdoor ice rink that transforms into a soccer field during the warmer months.

«Ovi, Ovi,» they chanted, using Ovechkin’s American nickname.

This rink, located in a typical Moscow suburb, is where the 39-year-old left wing first embarked on his remarkable journey in hockey.

It stands out amidst the surrounding gray high-rise buildings, having recently undergone a transformation by a sponsor, complete with a large, freshly painted sign declaring «eternal record 895.»

Antonina Mikhailova, an IT manager sporting Ovechkin’s jersey, expressed to AFP, «No matter what happens globally, sports transcend borders.»

Fyodor Troshin, an amateur hockey player waiting for Ovechkin, remarked on the possibility of Russian athletes returning to international events, saying, «That would be legendary; we must make that happen!»

The 40-year-old added, «Figures like Alexander Ovechkin are bridging the gap between Russian sports and international leagues.»

Despite his skills on the rink, Ovechkin’s political affiliations and ties to Russia have sparked some debate, especially due to his support for Vladimir Putin’s long tenure, even amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a careful political maneuver, Ovechkin has refrained from condemning Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, while also avoiding outright endorsement—a stance he knows would resonate well with Putin.

Reflecting on breaking Gretzky’s 26-year-old record, Ovechkin, who is famously missing a front tooth, told AFP, «I felt a sense of pride in what we accomplished, in breaking the record.»
