OpenAIs GPUs Overheat: Temporary Speed Limits Imposed Amid Ghibli Craze

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, announced the implementation of temporary speed limits for image generation in ChatGPT. This decision was prompted by the surge in demand for creating images in the anime style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli.

“It’s really exciting to see how much people enjoy the images in ChatGPT. However, our GPUs are overheating. We are going to temporarily introduce some speed limits while we work on making this process more efficient. I hope this won’t last long,” the entrepreneur wrote.

Altman also shared plans to increase the number of images users without paid subscriptions can generate daily from two to three. Previously, they were able to create up to two images using the AI model DALL-E 3.

In March, the startup integrated an image generator based on the GPT-4o model into ChatGPT and Sora. Initially, this tool was available to all users, but due to overwhelming demand, the company temporarily removed the service for users without paid subscriptions.

Users have praised the high quality of the service and began to create images in the Ghibli style en masse—associated with the legendary Japanese studio founded in 1985. Altman contributed by sharing an anime-style portrait and updated his profile picture on X.

As a result, several meme coins emerged, with the largest being Ghiblification (GHIBLI), which peaked at a market capitalization of $42 million. At the time of writing, it stands at $27 million.

Binance Alpha has added Ghiblification (Ghibli) and GhibliCZ (Ghibli) to its platform. The former token was created on the Solana network, while the latter operates on the BNB Chain.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that in March, Rohan Sahay, head of Sora’s development department, expressed the company’s intention to integrate a video generator into ChatGPT.
