OpenAI on the Verge of Securing $40 Billion Funding Round Led by SoftBank

While you are busy Ghibli-fying your images using the new image generation capabilities of ChatGPT, OpenAI is gearing up to secure even more funding. The company is on the verge of finalizing a new funding round valued at $40 billion, led by SoftBank, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The report indicates that other investors, including Magnetar Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund, and Altimeter Capital Management, are also in discussions with OpenAI regarding their participation in this funding round, with Magnetar potentially looking to invest $1 billion.

Bloomberg further revealed that SoftBank plans to initially contribute $7.5 billion, with an additional $2.5 billion coming from a consortium of investors. Additionally, the report mentions that a second tranche is expected this year, wherein the Japanese conglomerate will invest another $22.5 billion, while another $7.5 billion will be syndicated.

Previously, OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in a round led by Thrive Capital in October 2024, valuing the company at $157 billion. The latest Bloomberg report suggests that this mega round could elevate the company’s valuation to an astonishing $300 billion.
