No Class Weapon Restrictions in New Battlefield: Mixed Reactions from the Community

A recent post from the official Battlefield account has confirmed that there will be no weapon restrictions for classes in the upcoming game in the franchise.

The forthcoming Battlefield features a significant overhaul of the traditional class system—any soldier can access any weapon, while specialized gadgets and grenades remain unique to their classes. This approach resembles that of Battlefield 2042, albeit with a new bonus system designed to recapture the essence of classic Battlefield while affording players maximum freedom of choice.

The foundation of the new system consists of two main components:

Players can mix and match any weapon with most grenades or gadgets across all four classes (Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon). Previously, for example, sniper rifles were limited to the Recon class, while heavy machine guns were exclusive to Support. Now, everyone can select tools that resonate with their playstyle, regardless of their squad role.

To maintain the uniqueness of each role, developers have introduced special bonuses for the classes:

Marksman rifles, carbines, and shotguns will not carry any special bonuses.

According to DICE, this new approach aims to «create a system of interconnected systems and foundations that define a player’s role on the battlefield while allowing freedom to customize how that role is executed.» During testing sessions of Battlefield Labs, the developers are gathering feedback to find a balance between «clearly defined roles and player choice.»

The announcement of complete freedom in weapon selection has garnered mixed reactions from long-time fans of the series. Many have expressed a desire to return to «traditional limitations» to preserve the uniqueness of each class.

On the other hand, proponents of a more flexible approach believe it will attract a new audience tired of the strict boundaries of previous games. They argue that traditional weapon restrictions often hinder experimentation and slow down the pace of team operations.

If feedback during testing indicates that the community remains dissatisfied with the new system, DICE retains the option to make adjustments—the series has historically altered the balance between freedom and «defined roles.»

Currently, the new Battlefield is in active testing as part of the Battlefield Labs program. There is no official release date for the project yet. The game is set to be showcased in the summer of 2025, with a release planned within the current fiscal year—by March 31, 2026.
