Moscow Under Deluge: Flash Floods Caused by Record Rainfall

Heavy downpours caused flash flooding in Moscow on Tuesday, submerging roads and disrupting transportation throughout the city.

Footage shared on social media depicted vehicles engulfed by muddy water, traffic jams on flooded routes, and water seeping into tunnels and underground parking spaces.

Authorities reported that some areas of the city experienced a month’s worth of rainfall in less than two hours, but there were no reported injuries.

City transport officials advised residents to utilize public transport, although service was affected at various metro stations and on the Aeroexpress train heading to Sheremetyevo Airport.

The heavy rains followed a heatwave over the weekend and are part of a wider weather trend impacting central Russia. Recently, southern regions have experienced temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F).

Meteorologists indicated that the heavy rain, along with lightning and strong winds, would persist in Moscow through Tuesday night and into the following week.

Climate experts have long cautioned that Russia, warming 2.5 times faster than the global average, is increasingly susceptible to extreme weather, including extended heatwaves and intense rainfall.
