Microsofts AI Revolution: $500 Million Savings Amid Massive Layoffs of 15,000 Employees

Judson Althoff, the Chief Commercial Officer of Microsoft, stated that AI tools significantly enhance productivity across various domains, including sales, customer service, and software development. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing confidential sources.

According to Althoff, AI helped the company save over $500 million last year solely in call centers, while also increasing employee and customer satisfaction.

Microsoft is also leveraging this technology to engage with smaller clients. Although the initiative is still in its infancy, it has already generated tens of millions in revenue.

Interestingly, just about a week ago, the corporation laid off over 9,000 employees, marking the third round of job cuts this year, totaling around 15,000 job losses.

“We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to ensure the best conditions for the success of the company and teams in a dynamic market,” a Microsoft representative stated in an email.

Previously, the company’s CEO Satya Nadella mentioned that 20-30% of its code is written by artificial intelligence.

Messages regarding cost savings through AI usage may provoke negative sentiments among laid-off employees. Matt Turnbull, a producer at Xbox Game Studios, shared a post on LinkedIn suggesting that those feeling «overwhelmed» by Microsoft’s layoffs could seek support from chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot. This post was later removed.

“It’s truly a difficult time right now, and if you find yourself laid off or quietly preparing for it, you’re not alone and shouldn’t go through this alone. No AI service can replace your voice or life experience. However, in times of mental exhaustion, these tools can help you navigate through challenges more swiftly, calmly, and clearly,” Turnbull’s deleted post read.

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Chief Legal Officer, stated on Wednesday that the boost in productivity through AI was «not a primary factor» in recent job cuts.

Althoff informed employees that AI could enhance their effectiveness as salespeople. He noted that with the assistance of Copilot, each individual is able to identify more leads, close deals faster, and generate 9% more revenue.

Microsoft reported a record profit of $26 billion with a revenue of $70 billion in the first quarter. In January, the company announced plans to invest $80 billion in the AI sector for the 2025 fiscal year.

It’s worth mentioning that a survey conducted in January 2024 indicated that one in four CEOs worldwide anticipates staff reductions amid the widespread adoption of generative artificial intelligence.
