Meta Unveils AI Video Editing Tool with Limited Features Amidst Growing Competition

Meta has launched its first AI-powered video editing feature, integrating it directly into its existing platforms. Currently, the tool offers a limited selection of preset styles.

This new video editing tool is available in the [Meta AI app](https://the-decoder.com/meta-launches-ai-assistant-app-and-llama-api-platform/), on the [Meta.AI website](http://Meta.AI), and in the recently released Edits application, which is marketed as an alternative to CapCut, accessible in the U.S. and over a dozen other countries.

Upon launch, the feature provides more than 50 built-in prompts. With just a few clicks, users can transform their videos into cloud landscapes, cute scenes, teddy bear worlds, underwater realms, and much more. Meta has stated that by the end of this year, users will be able to input their own text prompts rather than selecting from a menu.

Meta offers the first ten seconds of video editing for free, though this is a limited-time offer. The company has not disclosed how long the trial will last or what the pricing will be after the initial launch.

Targeting content creators, Meta claims to have developed accessible effects in collaboration with them. By integrating this tool into the Edits app, Meta aims to streamline it within existing creative workflows.

Edited videos can be published directly to Facebook and Instagram from the apps. With Meta AI, users can also share their clips in the Discover feed.

Meta asserts that the new tool is «inspired» by the [Movie Gen models introduced in October 2024](https://the-decoder.com/meta-unveils-movie-gen-ai-model-for-video-image-and-audio-generation/), but it has not confirmed that these models are the foundation of the feature. Movie Gen served as a research demonstration for Meta, showcasing its technical capabilities to compete with rapidly advancing rivals like [OpenAI Sora](https://the-decoder.com/openai-brings-sora-video-generator-to-uk-and-eu/), [Runway](https://the-decoder.com/runway-releases-gen-4-video-model-with-focus-on-consistency/), [Kling](https://the-decoder.com/ai-video-generator-kling-releases-version-1-5-with-impressive-features/), and [Pika Labs](https://the-decoder.com/pika-labs-releases-ai-video-generator-2-0-with-new-features/).

Google’s [Veo 3](https://the-decoder.com/google-expands-access-to-veo-3-its-viral-new-video-model-through-the-gemini-app/) recently sparked interest for its ability to create not only photorealistic video clips but also matching soundtracks. Theoretically, Meta’s Movie Gen could offer similar capabilities, but Meta is taking a more cautious approach with its public release. Recently, [Character.ai](http://Character.ai), evolving into a kind of social network for synthetic content, has also introduced video features.
