Kremlin Hails U.S. Military Aid Pause as Key to Peace in Ukraine Crisis

The Kremlin stated on Tuesday that the abrupt halt of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, following a public disagreement between President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, could be a significant move towards concluding the conflict.

The suspension, which was revealed late on Monday, took immediate effect and affected hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of arms being dispatched to Ukraine, according to the New York Times.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked, «If the United States halts [military supplies], this is likely the best step toward achieving peace,» suggesting that it was a measure that could genuinely encourage the Kyiv government to engage in a peace process.

However, Peskov indicated that Russia would monitor how the situation on the ground develops, highlighting that the U.S. has been Ukraine’s primary military backer since Moscow initiated its full-scale invasion.

In Ukraine, reactions were filled with disbelief on Tuesday following Trump’s announcement to suspend military aid, with many claiming this decision favored the Kremlin.

Ukrainian media commentator Denys Kazansky pointed out that while U.S. support for Ukraine has paused, «North Korea and Iran have not ceased military assistance to Russia.»

In a related development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled a five-part initiative aimed at securing around 800 billion euros for defense in Europe and facilitating «immediate» military support for Ukraine.

«This is a pivotal moment for Europe, and we are prepared to intensify our efforts,» von der Leyen declared in Brussels on Tuesday morning.

Additionally, the UK affirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in the wake of the U.S. military aid suspension, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s deputy, Angela Rayner, stating that he remained «laser-focused» on achieving peace in Ukraine.
