A simulated meeting of the Federal Reserve System (Fed) using AI agents revealed that political pressure has created divisions among board members during discussions on interest rates, according to a report from Reuters.

Researchers from George Washington University developed virtual assistants modeled after real politicians to recreate a July 2025 session of the Federal Open Market Committee. They utilized historical stances of actual participants, along with their biographies and public speeches.

The assistants were tasked with analyzing relevant economic data and financial news to inform decisions regarding the interest rate.

Under the influence of political pressure, the agents became polarized, resulting in an increase in dissenting opinions.

«This simulation demonstrates that the Federal Reserve is only partially insulated from political influences, and external factors can affect internal decisions, even within an institution that operates under formal guidelines,» the study states.

While few banks are ready to entrust monetary policy to AI systems, a growing number are using the technology to enhance their operations.

«It is crucial to understand that we are not utilizing artificial intelligence to formulate or establish monetary policy or any other policies. Instead, we aim to leverage it to improve efficiency and amplify the contributions of our staff in areas such as research and analytics,» stated Michelle Bullock, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Central banks recognize the strategic value of AI and are actively experimenting with its applications for data discovery and analysis, as mentioned in an April report by the Bank for International Settlements. Many are still in the early stages of implementing the technology.

Notably, in Ukraine, the «world’s first» government AI agent was launched on the Diia portal. It not only answers questions but also provides services directly within the chat.
