Donation Wallet for Ross Ulbricht Receives 300 BTC in a Single Transaction

The founder of the darknet marketplace Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht, has received 300 BTC (approximately $31.4 million) through a single transaction to his donation wallet.

Opinions among commentators have varied regarding the source of this substantial donation. Some speculate that it could have been sent by a Bitcoin supporter who appreciates the entrepreneur’s role in promoting cryptocurrency. Others believe it might have come from a grateful customer of Silk Road.

Co-founder of the Satflow platform, Robert Clarke, suggested that this could be Ulbricht’s way of laundering income he concealed from authorities. His view has garnered some backing.

In discussions, users on addressed the issue of blockchain privacy.

«I’m happy for him, but that’s one of the issues with Bitcoin — anyone can see how much money you have. It’s not only risky but a bit eerie,» commented a supporter of the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero.

On January 21, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree granting full and unconditional clemency to Ulbricht, fulfilling one of the promises from his election campaign.

Ulbricht was arrested in October 2013. In May 2015, U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest convicted him of drug trafficking, conspiracy to transport drugs, computer hacking, money laundering, and leading a criminal organization. He received two life sentences without the possibility of parole, serving 11 years.

After his release, Coinbase’s product director Connor Grogan reported that he discovered 430 BTC in multiple wallets that were presumably linked to Ulbricht. These assets remained untouched for 13 years and were unrelated to the approximately 174,000 BTC seized by authorities from the marketplace.

On May 29, an auction featuring Ulbricht’s personal belongings concluded, collecting around $1.8 million in Bitcoin. Items auctioned on the Scarce City platform included three prisoner identification cards, a prison notebook, a locker lock, clothing, shoes from his release, and paintings created during his time in prison.

«I left Arizona, the state where I was incarcerated. It’s time to travel. This means shedding the unnecessary and turning a new page. […] I don’t need reminders, but I’m sure some of you would be happy to have them,» Ulbricht expressed.

As a reminder, during the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, his first speech following his release, Ulbricht outlined three principles for the future — «freedom, decentralization, and unity.»
