Discords Ambitious Plans: Harnessing AI to Enhance Forum Conversations and Information Exchange

Discord is planning to enhance its platform’s functionality and simplify information sharing for its users. The company is particularly optimistic about leveraging large language models (LLMs) to analyze lengthy discussions and extract the most significant insights, as reported by The Verge.

As one of the leading hubs for gaming communities, Discord recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. The platform is directly accessible on PlayStation and Xbox, and it has served as an inspiration for Nintendo’s GameChat on the Switch 2.

Despite its widespread popularity, Discord has not fully replaced traditional forums, which were once the backbone of online communities, primarily due to its lack of structured organization. Luke Planchett from Aftermath noted this shortcoming. Peter Sellis, Discord’s Senior Vice President of Product, echoed this sentiment during an interview with The Verge, expressing the company’s intent to address the issue:

«We don’t want valuable knowledge to remain trapped within Discord,» he stated.

One of the proposed solutions involves utilizing LLMs to sift through endless streams of messages and conversations, generating organized summaries that can be shared outside of Discord.

Additionally, another avenue for development is to create a more structured information exchange. Sellis mentioned that Discord is looking into introducing forum-like features and plans to invest in this direction, particularly to meet the needs of game developers.

Another critical objective for the Discord team, according to Sellis, is to develop a product that caters to both large community servers and smaller groups of gamers. Statistics indicate that 90% of all activity occurs within these «small servers.»

Specific timelines and details regarding these innovations have not yet been disclosed. Sellis emphasized that the company «wants to take its time to get it right,» recognizing that enabling the transfer of information outside of Discord may necessitate additional efforts from moderators and server administrators.
