David Gaider Reveals the Tension Between Mass Effect and Dragon Age Teams at BioWare

Recently, former lead writer of **Dragon Age**, David Gaider, shared insights into the internal dynamics of **BioWare**. He revealed that there were quite tense relationships between the teams working on the iconic series **Mass Effect** and **Dragon Age**. He also recounted his attempts to overhaul the storyline of **Anthem**.

According to Gaider, the studio was essentially split into two factions, each with its own culture and approach to development: “For a long time, it essentially felt like two companies under one roof: the **Dragon Age** team and the **Mass Effect** team. You could say they were like two separate studios, and they did not get along well.”

Gaider noted that his colleagues from the **Mass Effect** team were skeptical of his ideas, perceiving them as “too much in the spirit of **Dragon Age**.”

In the same discussion thread, Gaider reminisced about the creation of **Anthem**, which was initially known as **Dylan**. After finishing work on **Dragon Age: Inquisition** and experiencing burnout, he decided to switch projects and joined the team behind the new IP that would later be recognized as **Anthem**. This turned out to be a mistake.

Furthermore, he mentioned that it quickly became apparent that the team did not have much desire to create an RPG. “Moreover, they were opposed to RPGs,” he added, continuing his reflection as a former lead writer at **BioWare**.

In an effort to salvage the situation, Gaider requested an opportunity to step up as creative director. In response, he received a cold rejection accompanied by a degrading remark that «nothing would come of him outside of **BioWare**.» This moment marked a turning point for him, leading to his definitive decision to leave the company.

It’s worth noting that Gaider’s company, **Summerfall Studios**, has successfully released **Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical** and announced a narrative card roguelike titled **Malys**.
