Cyberattack Paralyzes Russian Railways Online Services Amid Rising Digital Threats

Russian Railways announced on Tuesday that its website and mobile application were taken offline due to a cyberattack, marking the first such incident since last summer.

The state-owned railway operator clarified that ticket offices remained operational and sales at train stations continued without interruption.

“Our website and mobile application have experienced a significant DDoS attack,” Russian Railways communicated via Telegram. “We are actively working to restore access as quickly as possible.”

This incident occurred just a day after Moscow’s Transportation Department reported disruptions due to “technical work” affecting the Metro app.

Additionally, Russian media indicated that the Metro app and website may also have faced a denial-of-service attack, with a brief appearance of a message in Ukrainian from Ukrainian Railways on the Metro website.

On the same day, the governor of Belgorod, a region bordering Ukraine, reported that a DDoS attack on the Rostelecom provider had interrupted the regional administration’s weekly live stream.

Russian Railways had previously acknowledged major cyberattacks in July 2024 and February 2022, both of which saw services restored within a matter of hours.
