Chinas Foreign Minister Visits Russia to Address Urgent Ukraine Crisis Negotiations

China’s Foreign Minister is set to travel to Russia next week for discussions on various topics, including efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine, both nations announced on Friday.

«A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that, at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister Wang Yi will make an official visit to Russia from March 31 to April 2.»

During his visit, Wang is expected to meet with Russian officials and have discussions with Lavrov, as indicated by Beijing.

«China intends to use this visit to collaborate with Russia in advancing the implementation of the significant agreements reached by the two heads of state,» said Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a press briefing.

He went on to say that Wang would participate in «thorough discussions regarding the future development of China-Russia relations, as well as key international and regional matters of mutual interest.»

Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the talks would focus on «bilateral relations, high-level exchanges—up to the top leadership level—along with the most urgent topics on the international agenda, such as the potential resolution of the situation surrounding Ukraine.»

Last month, China welcomed Russian security chief Sergei Shoigu, shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for his «constructive efforts» to mitigate the conflict.

China has consistently expressed its support for any measures leading to a ceasefire, although it faces increasing pressure to encourage Moscow to engage in meaningful negotiations aimed at ending the war.

On Thursday, France’s foreign minister urged Wang in Beijing to leverage China’s influence to encourage Russia to enter talks with «serious and sincere proposals.»
