BBVA Unveils Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading and Custody Service for Retail Customers in Spain

The BBVA banking group has launched a service for retail customers in Spain that allows trading and storing Bitcoin and Ethereum. This feature is accessible through the bank’s mobile app for all adult clients.

Before the launch, BBVA submitted an application to the National Securities Market Commission in March 2025.

The bank manages and secures clients’ assets independently, without involving third-party custodians. Users can execute transactions personally. BBVA does not provide investment advice.

*“We aim to simplify investment in crypto assets for our retail customers in Spain through an easy-to-use solution on their mobile phones,”* said Gonzalo Rodriguez, head of retail banking at BBVA Spain.

The service complies with the European regulation known as MiCA.

Previously, BBVA launched similar services through its subsidiary in Switzerland and Turkey in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

Spain becomes the third market for the bank and the first where the service targets retail clients directly.

Francisco Maroto, head of digital assets, emphasized that BBVA will continue to expand its business in this sector.

The bank plans to introduce additional cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and real-world tokenized assets, such as bonds and ETFs, in the future.

It’s worth noting that in December 2023, BBVA’s Swiss division transitioned its digital currency custody services to the Ripple-owned platform, Metaco Harmonize.
