AI Narrators Set to Enhance Moscow Metros Announcements as Testing Begins

Testing of an artificial intelligence system, designed to read out audio messages, has commenced on the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow Metro, as reported by Moscow’s deputy mayor, Maxim Liksutov.

The AI announcer will be utilized to convey information to passengers «in a unified style of Moscow transport,» the official explained. «Following the pilot launch of the technology on the Sokolnicheskaya line, we will decide on its further implementation in the metro and beyond, taking into account passenger feedback,» Liksutov was quoted by the Moscow Department of Transport.

Moscow Metro specialists are creating audio files for autonomous announcements—only requiring the preparation of text, which is then uploaded into the program, along with specifications for tone, intonation, and pause lengths. The AI was trained using recordings from Metro announcers.

The Red Line was chosen for testing this new solution due to its high traffic, including transfers to other metro lines, the MCC, and suburban rail services, as well as its proximity to major transport hubs. This line also services the Komsomolskaya station, which caters to the Leningrad, Yaroslavl, and Kazan stations, while connecting with the MCC and the Circle Line.
