Activision Reveals Use of Generative AI in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Development

The publisher of Call of Duty, Activision, has recently updated the game’s page for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Steam, indicating the use of generative AI during the development of their latest flagship shooter.

This move comes in response to a new requirement from the platform to disclose information regarding the utilization of artificial intelligence in game development.

“Our team employs generative AI tools to create certain in-game assets,” Activision stated.

However, the company did not specify which particular elements were generated using neural networks.

Call of Duty is one of the largest franchises in the video game industry. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 became the highest-selling game in the U.S. in 2024, despite its release occurring at the end of October.

Previously, players had suspected that certain loading screens and «player cards» in Black Ops 6 as well as Modern Warfare 3 (2023) were created using AI tools.

In January 2024, Valve updated the form that developers complete when submitting their games to Steam, adding a section for AI-related information.

«Valve will use this information during the game’s review process prior to its release. We will also publish a significant portion of your responses on the game’s Steam store page, so users can understand how it utilizes AI,» said company representatives.

It’s worth recalling that in 2021, Valve prohibited games involving blockchain, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies on Steam.
