Tragedy Strikes Sochi: Ukrainian Drone Attack Claims Lives and Injures Many

Two women lost their lives in a Ukrainian drone strike near Sochi, a resort city in southern Russia, according to regional officials early Thursday.

Governor of Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, reported that wreckage from a shot-down drone fell in the town of Adler, located just south of Sochi, after being intercepted by Russian air defense forces. He mentioned that the women were struck while on Aviatsionnaya Street.

Kondratyev also noted on Telegram that parts of the drone landed near an oil depot. The incident occurred close to the Olympic Park, where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held, and near the airport named after Vitaliy Sevastyanov in Sochi.

The governor stated that eleven individuals sustained injuries during the attack, including a traffic police officer who was critically hurt and airlifted to a hospital in the region. Four of the injured were admitted to a hospital, while others were treated on an outpatient basis.

“I have directed Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin to assist the families of the deceased and those injured in the incident,” Kondratyev said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that air defense systems intercepted seven Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar region during the night, in addition to nearly twenty others over the Black and Azov seas.
