Russia and Ukraine Agree on Major Soldier Repatriation Deal Amid Ongoing Conflict

Russia has returned the remains of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers who died in battle and has received the remains of 19 Russian soldiers as part of an agreement reached during peace discussions in Istanbul last month, according to Russian officials on Thursday.

Vladimir Medinsky, a Kremlin adviser and the main negotiator for peace talks, announced the exchange via a Telegram message. Ukrainian officials subsequently confirmed the transfer, stating that the Red Cross assisted in bringing back the bodies of their soldiers.

“Investigators from law enforcement, along with specialists from the interior ministry, will conduct all required analyses and identify the returned bodies,” noted a statement from Ukraine’s headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war.

Images and videos released by Russian state media depicted groups wearing white hazmat suits moving body bags between refrigerated trucks.

An unnamed source informed the state-controlled news outlet RIA Novosti that Russia intends to return the remains of an additional 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers soon.

The return of deceased soldiers and the exchange of prisoners have been among the limited areas of cooperation between the two opposing sides since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

During talks in Istanbul last month, Moscow and Kyiv agreed to swap the remains of 6,000 soldiers from each side. They also reached an agreement for a significant prisoner exchange but could not finalize a ceasefire arrangement.

Since the conflict began, tens of thousands of soldiers have lost their lives on both sides, as reported by independent observers and Western intelligence. Neither country provides regular or independently verifiable casualty statistics.
