Metas Urgent Bid for AI Supremacy: Tents Deployed for Data Center Construction

Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg are racing to develop their superintelligent technology. The company continues to entice AI researchers to join its ranks, and on Monday, Zuckerberg announced the construction of a 5-gigawatt data center named Hyperion.

The urgency is clear. As reported by SemiAnalysis last week and noted by Business Insider, Meta is so eager to boost its computational capacity that it is literally setting up tents to temporarily house data centers while permanent facilities are still under construction.

«This structure is neither beautiful nor extravagant. It’s designed to quickly deploy computing resources!» said the SemiAnalysis report. «From pre-made power and cooling modules to ultra-light constructions, speed is of the essence since there are no backup power sources in sight (i.e., no diesel generators visible),» the company added.

This all indicates that Meta is looking to rapidly enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities after falling behind competitors like OpenAI, xAI, and Google, and Zuckerberg is not willing to wait for the company to catch up.

Regarding the Hyperion data center, Meta representative Ashley Gabriel informed TechCrunch that it will be located in Louisiana and is expected to reach a capacity of 2 gigawatts by 2030.
