Russia Escalates Drone Warfare Against Ukraine Amidst Stalled Peace Talks and U.S. Ultimatum

Updated to include the airstrike on Dobropillia.

On Wednesday, a Russian airstrike targeted a central square in the frontline town of Dobropillia, resulting in one fatality and more than 20 injuries, with concerns that additional victims may be trapped beneath the rubble, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Russian military initiated a new series of air assaults on Ukraine late Tuesday into early Wednesday, disregarding U.S. President Trump’s requests for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire.

Regional authorities reported that a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) bomb was dropped on Dobropillia, located just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the front line.

This attack came shortly after President Donald Trump warned of impending new sanctions unless Russian President Vladimir Putin complied with a peace agreement within the next 50 days.

It has been over a month since Ukrainian and Russian officials engaged in direct peace discussions, with no future meetings planned despite the Kremlin’s assertions of a willingness to negotiate.

Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russia unleashed at least 400 drones overnight, alongside an Iskander missile launched from the annexed region of Crimea.

In addition to the casualties in Dobropillia, these attacks resulted in one death and numerous injuries, as reported by Ukrainian officials.

A missile strike also caused a disruption of power and water supplies in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as per local authorities.

The Mayor of Kryvyi Rih, Oleksandr Vilkul, stated that at least 15 individuals were injured, including a 17-year-old boy who sustained serious abdominal injuries and required hospitalization. An industrial facility was destroyed, and utility services were compromised.

«This has never occurred before. A ballistic missile and 28 Shahed drones were launched simultaneously,» Vilkul noted on Telegram, referring to the Iranian-manufactured drones utilized by Russia.

Russia has escalated its summer offensive amid stalled ceasefire negotiations, continuing its attacks on the battlefield while executing coordinated strikes involving drones, artillery, and missiles.

On Monday, Trump announced a deal with NATO’s secretary-general to provide additional U.S. air defense systems and weaponry to Ukraine, expressing dissatisfaction with Russia’s unwillingness to agree to a ceasefire.
