Kickstarter Unveils Skymill: A Mechanical Weather Indicator with Air Quality Monitoring

Designer Gustav Rosén and the Swedish brand Klong have introduced the Skymill project on Kickstarter – a weather indicator featuring mechanical flags to represent different weather states. Additionally, this device monitors air quality within the room. The gadget is set to hit the market in spring of next year.

The Skymill boasts a metallic base with flags that can display up to 35 distinct weather conditions. These flags are concealed within the housing and are raised according to the forecast. For instance, if it’s sunny outside, the device will elevate the flag with a sun emblem, whereas a snowflake flag will be raised when it snows.

On the unit, there’s a dial that allows users to check the expected weather conditions for three, six, nine hours, as well as tomorrow. It also includes a display that shows temperature and humidity levels.

Equipped with sensors, Skymill assesses indoor air quality. If levels of carbon dioxide and dust rise and remain elevated for over ten minutes, the device will raise a flag featuring a bird, indicating it’s time to ventilate the room.

The weather information is sourced from the internet, necessitating a connection to the home’s Wi-Fi network. On its own, the device measures various parameters including:

— Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
— Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
— Dust (PM2.5)
— Relative Humidity
— Temperature

The project creators shared that they developed Skymill due to a longing for tangible objects. Modern forecasts have become overly informative and often provide excessive information, yet they do so in a uniform and monotonous manner.

Sales for Skymill will commence in April 2026. Currently, the device is available for pre-order on Kickstarter at a price of 350 euros, with a polished metal base version also offered.
