Windows 10 and Windows 11 User Shares Nearly Equal After Four Years

Four years after its release, Windows 11 has nearly caught up to Windows 10 in terms of user share. Currently, the market shares for Windows 10 and Windows 11 are almost equal, standing at 48.76% and 47.98% respectively, as reported by the analytics platform StatCounter.

By June 2025, the share of Windows 11 increased from 43.22% to 47.98%, which is a growth of 4.76%. Such a notable rise was observed by StatCounter just two months following the launch of Windows 11. In January 2022, the market share for Microsoft’s latest operating system jumped from 2.6% to 7.89%. Over the course of 2022, Windows 11’s share rose to 18.12%.

The user base for Windows 11 is expanding while the share of Windows 10 is declining. Last month, Windows 10 saw a drop of 4.43%, decreasing from 53.19% to 48.76%. Although Windows 10 remains more popular than Windows 11, the gap is now less than 1%.

Windows 11 has gained favor in certain regions, with its share reaching 54.72% in the United States, 59.01% in the United Kingdom, and 51.58% in Canada.

There are only three months left until the end of support for Windows 10. Last month, Microsoft offered users the chance to receive free security updates for a year. Therefore, a rapid decline of Windows 10’s share to the level of Windows 7, which has only 2.19%, isn’t expected. Corporate users of Windows 10 will still be able to access extended security updates for an additional three years.

Moreover, Microsoft does not plan to lower the system requirements for Windows 11, which means many PCs will continue to run Windows 10 for many years. According to StatCounter, the share for Windows XP is at 0.43%, Windows 8 at 0.31%, and Windows 8.1 at 0.28%. Nevertheless, considering Microsoft’s claim of 1.4 billion Windows users, even half a percent translates to a significant number of devices.

As of the end of 2024, the market shares for Windows 11 and Windows 10 were 34.1% and 62.73% respectively.
