Pulkovo Airport Launches AI-Powered Video Analytics System to Enhance Passenger Flow Management

The first phase of implementing artificial intelligence for operational event analytics within the terminal building at Pulkovo Airport has been successfully completed. This initiative is part of the «Stream» project, which aims to reduce pre-flight passenger processing time. The initial stage focuses on the check-in area, enabling staff to automatically predict queue formation for timely responses and the opening of additional check-in counters.

The implementation was carried out by Lure IT LLC, a company specializing in the automation and digital transformation of enterprises operating in continuous processes, including the use of AI-based systems. To achieve the project’s objectives, a solution based on the RTMIP product from the domestic software registry was utilized (#13249).

«Last year, we established a passenger and transport flow management center, which monitors the airport round the clock to manage infrastructure loads. During the project’s launch, we identified the need for a tool to oversee passenger flow within the terminal and analyze queue times. By implementing the system from Lure IT LLC for monitoring the check-in hall, we improved the efficiency of check-in counter distribution, fully automated wait time measurement, and gained the ability to react to passenger congestion before queues form. The next step is to extend this implementation to other areas of the airport,» stated Alexey Kostylev, head of the operational support service for ground handling at Northern Capital Gateway LLC (the operator of Pulkovo Airport).

The next phase will involve expanding the system to include passenger entry and pre-flight screening zones, in accordance with security requirements, as well as the terminal area and parking facilities for monitoring traffic loads and the airport apron.

The advancement of machine vision systems at Pulkovo Airport significantly enhances employee operations and improves passenger comfort. The uniqueness of this solution lies in its ability to operate within a secure environment, adhering to information security requirements.

The «Stream» project at Pulkovo Airport has made it possible to reduce pre-flight processing time from 1.5 hours to just 30 minutes.
