Tragic Drone Strike: 9 Casualties in Sumy Hours After Peace Talks Fail

A Russian drone struck a minibus in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring four others, according to officials on Saturday. This incident occurred just hours after Moscow and Kyiv conducted their first direct peace negotiations in several years.

«This is not merely another instance of shelling; it represents a blatant war crime,» stated Ukraine’s National Police in a Telegram update.

The state-run TASS news agency, referencing a statement from Russia’s Defense Ministry, reported that Russian forces carried out drone strikes on a site in the Sumy region believed to be used for staging Ukrainian military equipment.

Friday’s meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Turkey did not succeed in establishing a temporary ceasefire. It marked the first direct communication between the two sides since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

«Rather than halting the violence immediately as proposed by the U.S., Europe, Ukraine, and others, Putin persists in his assault on civilians,» remarked Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

«There should be no misconceptions. We must intensify pressure on Moscow to end Russian terror,» he expressed on X.

Ukrainian police shared images of a dark blue minibus that was nearly destroyed, with its roof ripped off and windows shattered.

Reuters has been unable to independently verify the accounts from both Ukrainian and Russian sources. Each side denies deliberately attacking civilians in their operations, yet thousands have lost their lives in the conflict, with the vast majority being Ukrainian citizens.
