Google Integrates AI-Powered Scam Detector into Chrome for Enhanced User Protection

Google has integrated a new AI-powered security mechanism into its Chrome browser.

The tech giant utilized its large language model (LLM) Gemini Nano to protect users from fraudsters and plans to introduce new alerts on Android to highlight spam notifications.

The enhanced protection mode in Chrome offers the «highest level of security» against phishing and other online threats. It will alert users about risky websites, including those that may have gone unnoticed before.

«The AI Gemini Nano is well-suited for this purpose due to its ability to analyze the diverse and complex nature of websites, enabling us to quickly adapt to new fraud tactics,» the company stated in its blog.

These measures extend to notifications that may be sent from fraudulent sites. If the LLM suspects anything amiss, Chrome will notify the user about the questionable nature of the messages.

The company also reported on its use of artificial intelligence in combating search-related fraud, discovering and blocking hundreds of millions of such results daily.

Google has encountered a rising number of criminals posing as airline customer support representatives. It has reduced the number of these dishonest users by over 80%, decreasing the likelihood of encountering a fraudulent phone number in search results.

It’s important to note that in May, Google’s shares fell by 9% after information surfaced that Apple was «actively considering» revamping its Safari web browser for AI-powered search.

Additionally, in April, OpenAI expressed interest in acquiring Chrome.
