Tragedy Strikes: Three Firefighters Lose Lives in Russias Far East Wildfire Battle

Three firefighters who were working to combat the catastrophic wildfires in Russia’s Zabaikalsky region were discovered dead on Friday, as reported by the region’s environmental ministry.

This tragic update comes shortly after Rinat Khismatulin, the region’s fire safety chief, resigned «on his own initiative.»

The firefighters, Andrei Abramov, Andrei Alekmensky, and Alexander Nazimov, had gone missing on April 23 while they were en route from their deployment camp in the Tungokochensky district to the nearby village of Kyker to purchase supplies.

Local media outlets indicated that at least 30 individuals, including community volunteers, participated in the search and rescue operations.

On Thursday, volunteers located the personal items of the missing firefighters in the woods, and their bodies were found the following day.

The regional Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal investigation into this matter.

As of early Friday, the Zabaikalsky region had over 87% of the total wildfire area in Russia, following the declaration of a federal-level state of emergency last month, according to the country’s Aerial Forest Protection Service.

Approximately 813 firefighting professionals, including personnel from other regions of Russia, have been sent to help control the wildfires in the area, as stated by the agency.
