Wildfire Crisis Deepens in Russias Far East: Emergency Minister Launches Assessment in Zabaikalsky Region

On Monday, Russia’s Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov traveled to the Zabaikalsky region in the country’s Far East to evaluate the escalating wildfires there.

According to regional authorities cited by the Interfax news agency, as of Monday, there were 50 wildfires raging across Zabaikalsky, affecting approximately 168,000 hectares (415,137 acres). Nearly 70% of these fires are situated in the remote, sparsely populated Tungokochensky district.

Accompanying Kurenkov was Natural Resources and Ecology Minister Alexander Kozlov, as reported by the state-run TASS news agency. The Emergency Situations Ministry shared footage of the two officials arriving by plane in Chita, the regional capital.

«The ministers will review the situation on the ground due to the extensive wildfires,» the Emergency Situations Ministry informed TASS. The officials are set to survey the most impacted regions from the air and evaluate firefighting operations before convening for a coordination meeting.

Currently, the responsibility for combating the wildfires lies with Russia’s Forest Fund and the Federal Forest Service. However, Interfax noted on Monday that a federal state of emergency might be declared, which would transfer oversight to the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Last week, authorities in the Zabaikalsky region imposed movement restrictions to manage the rapidly spreading fires. Residents must secure prior permission from local officials to leave their communities, except when traveling on regional or federal roads.

«The situation is extraordinary and highly dangerous. Almost the entire region is on fire,» Zabaikalsky Governor Alexander Osipov stated in a televised address last week. «Every day, numerous settlements are at risk.»

Since the beginning of the year, Russia has reported at least 680 wildfires affecting more than 178,000 hectares (439,847 acres), as mentioned by Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov last Monday.

As of Friday, over 80% of these fires were concentrated in the Zabaikalsky region, according to Russia’s Aerial Forest Protection Service, which monitors wildfire activity.
