Age of Empires II: The Three Kingdoms Expansion Launching on PS5 May 6

The developers of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition have announced that the PlayStation 5 version of the game will be released on May 6. On that day, the expansion The Three Kingdoms will also launch, highlighting the period of the Three Kingdoms in China.

The Three Kingdoms will feature three campaigns set against the backdrop of battles throughout China. Players will take command of the armies of the Shu, Wei, and Wu kingdoms, each boasting unique units, technologies, and heroic figures with formidable abilities. Additionally, gamers can utilize the special skills of legendary heroes such as the commanders Liu Bei and Cao Cao.

The expansion will introduce five new civilizations, which include the aforementioned Shu, Wei, and Wu, along with the Jurchens and Khitans, who vie for power in northern China following the Three Kingdoms era. Each civilization has its distinct units; for instance, the Shu features the White Feather Guard, an infantry unit that slows down enemies, and a war chariot that launches volleys of arrows from a large multi-shot crossbow.

Other new units will also be added, including the floating fortresses known as Louchuan, effective against naval ships and structures, as well as rocket carts, siege weapons that unleash a barrage of incendiary rockets upon foes.

Pre-orders for Age of Empires II are now available on the PS Store here. Those who pre-order the standard edition will receive the expansion The Mountain Royals and 24 animated profile icons. There’s also a premium edition available that guarantees additional bonuses.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was initially released on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) in November 2019 and made its way to Xbox in January 2023. The strategy game is also accessible via Game Pass.
