Microtransactions Dominate Over Half of PC Gaming Revenues in 2024

The gaming industry continues to astonish. Despite the negative perception of microtransactions online, they accounted for over half of all revenue generated from PC games last year.

According to analysts from Newzoo, 58% of the revenue from PC games last year—amounting to a notable $24.4 billion—stemmed from microtransactions. This segment experienced a modest growth of 1.4% compared to the previous year. What can we conclude? Even amidst widespread criticism, the average PC gamer doesn’t seem to mind spending money on boosts, skins, and similar items. Leading the way in this area are industry giants like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Roblox, and Fortnite, which continue to capture the attention of millions.

However, microtransactions aren’t the sole source of income. DLCs have also increased their share, boosting their revenue by 0.8% to $5.3 billion, which constitutes 14% of the overall earnings. Titles like Diablo IV, Elden Ring, and World of Warcraft have excelled in this segment. On the other hand, the premium segment, despite accounting for 28% of total revenue ($10.7 billion), saw a decline of 2.6% compared to 2023.

The overall income from PC gaming in 2024 reached $37.3 billion, reflecting a slight increase of 0.1% from the previous year.

Will microtransactions continue to dominate in 2025? That question is likely rhetorical.
