Tragic Drone Assault in Kharkiv Claims Five Lives Amid Urgent Calls for Ceasefire

Russian drone strikes in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv have resulted in at least five fatalities and over 30 injuries, as reported by authorities on Friday. This attack marks a continuation of the assaults amid increasing U.S. demands for a ceasefire.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump urging both Russia and Ukraine to negotiate and reach a resolution to the protracted and expensive conflict, both nations have intensified their aerial offensives.

The assault on Kharkiv occurred just hours before military leaders from France and Britain were set to meet in Kyiv for discussions regarding the potential deployment of a European peacekeeping force to assist in maintaining any future ceasefire.

«An 88-year-old man has succumbed to his injuries in the hospital… Currently, the death toll stands at five, with 32 others injured,» stated Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov on social media, providing an update on the situation.

An AFP journalist in Kharkiv observed rescue teams sifting through the charred remains of a collapsed residential building, with smoke billowing where homes once stood.

Throughout its ongoing invasion, Ukraine has consistently accused Russia of targeting civilian areas and non-combatants.

Moscow, however, denies intentionally striking civilian targets, despite a significant number of civilian casualties resulting from Russian airstrikes, which have included attacks on schools, hospitals, and residential complexes.

During the night, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv with lethal drones, leading to at least four civilian deaths and more than 30 injuries, primarily aimed at a residential structure. A large fire erupted at the site, affecting an area exceeding 600 square meters.

Additionally, six more individuals suffered injuries from Russian strikes in the Ukrainian regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv, according to local authorities.

AFP reporters in the Ukrainian capital heard loud explosions as the city’s air defense systems were activated throughout the night.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine launched over 100 drones at Russian territory overnight, including strikes on the capital, Moscow.

In one reported incident, a man in the Bryansk border area was killed, as noted by the regional governor in a Telegram update on Friday.

Following the nighttime assaults, military leaders from London and Paris arrived in Kyiv for negotiations on a possible troop deployment.

«There will eventually be a necessity for military support or assurance once peace is established. This is the purpose of our military leaders’ visit to Kyiv today—to advance this initiative,» French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot remarked during a NATO meeting in Brussels.

Ukraine is advocating for the West, including the United States, to incorporate firm security assurances within any comprehensive peace agreement to prevent future Russian aggression.
