Qualcomm Unveils the Next-Gen Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 Chip for Mid-Range Powerhouse Smartphones

Qualcomm has officially launched its latest chip, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. This new processor is manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm technology and features an octa-core configuration: one Cortex X4 core clocked at 3.2 GHz, three Cortex A720 cores at 3.0 GHz, two Cortex A720 cores at 2.8 GHz, and two Cortex A720 cores at 2.0 GHz.

Performance has improved across the board, with CPU speeds increasing by 31%, graphics performance by 49%, and power consumption decreasing by 39% compared to the previous Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. Additionally, enhancements in artificial intelligence processing have resulted in a 44% gain, thanks to a new neural processing unit and doubled overall memory.

The chip includes an Adreno 825 GPU, which is built on a similar architecture to the Adreno 830 but has fewer cores. It is equipped with 12 MB of dedicated graphics memory.

It supports cameras up to 320 MP, as well as 108 MP photography with multi-frame processing or the ability to handle three 36 MP cameras simultaneously. The display refresh rate can reach up to 144 Hz at QHD+ or WQHD+ resolution.

In terms of wireless capabilities, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 supports 5G (up to 4.2 Gbps, without mmWave), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and XPAN. The processor is compatible with LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.0 storage, and supports fast charging via Quick Charge 5 technology. It also features support for audio technologies such as aptX Adaptive, Lossless, and Voice.

The first smartphone to utilize this new processor will be the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro, with the chip expected to appear in devices from iQOO, Oppo, and Meizu as well. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is aimed at high-performance mid-range smartphones.
