South Korean Giants Compete for the Chance to Revive the Iconic StarCraft Franchise

On March 31, the iconic RTS franchise **StarCraft** celebrates its 27th anniversary. Over these years, the franchise has not only solidified its reputation as one of the finest in its genre but has also attracted a vast audience, particularly in South Korea. Interestingly, Korean companies, unlike **Blizzard**, are **eager** to produce a new installment in the series, and they have already begun discussions with the rights holders.

Among those vying for the revival of **StarCraft** are industry giants like **NCSoft**, **Krafton**, **Nexon**, and **Netmarble**. Representatives from some of these companies have even visited **Blizzard’s** California headquarters to pitch their ideas.

The potential agreement at stake involves rights for developing and independently publishing games within the **StarCraft** franchise. Notably, the new title does not necessarily have to be an RTS; the rights would allow for experimentation across various genres, including RPGs, shooters, mobile games, and more.

Whether this competition will evolve beyond initial concepts remains to be seen. Meanwhile, **Blizzard** is reportedly revisiting the idea of developing a shooter based on **StarCraft**, a notion shared a few months ago by renowned journalist **Jason Schreier**.
