VK Set to Unveil “Max”: A Russian Super-App Inspired by WeChat

Russian technology powerhouse VK is set to introduce a «super-app» named «Max» this spring, aiming to mirror the multi-functional capabilities of China’s popular WeChat, as reported by the business newspaper Vedomosti, citing informed sources.

The beta iteration of Max is said to include a dedicated messaging platform, a payment system, mini-apps, and a chatbot builder tailored for entrepreneurs. Future plans may incorporate government services, further drawing parallels with WeChat.

Nevertheless, an unidentified spokesman from VK stated that Max will not be linked with the company’s existing social media platforms like Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki.

«Max leverages the knowledge gained from developing all existing VK messaging apps. However, it remains an independent product with a dedicated development team,» the spokesperson mentioned.

Recently, VK announced a staggering net loss of nearly 95 billion rubles (approximately $1.12 billion) for 2024, nearly tripling its losses from the previous year.

Since 2021, there have been growing concerns about government influence on VK, especially after the appointment of Vladimir Kiriyenko, son of Sergei Kiriyenko, as CEO.

Experts interviewed by Vedomosti predict that VK could allocate up to 1 billion rubles ($11.8 million) for the initial phase of Max’s development.

Sources from VK indicate that Max is expected to be available on iOS and Android this spring, accessible to users with Russian or Belarusian phone numbers on desktops, smartphones, and web browsers.
