Grok 3 Introduces Enhanced AI-Driven Search and Image Editing Features

Users of Grok are now able to utilize two new features as xAI launches an enhanced research tool and image editor. These updates are being gradually rolled out across the platform.

The latest feature, «DeeperSearch,» operates alongside the existing «DeepSearch» function, although it requires more time to process requests. Testing reveals some notable distinctions between the two: DeepSearch can address questions about the «latest AI news» in approximately one minute by sourcing data from 40 outlets—many of which are dubious X accounts like «feeltheomega» and «theaidaily_,» referring to news spam sites.

The results also highlight certain current limitations. It appears that Grok struggles to access many major news channels, heavily relying instead on X sources.

In contrast, DeeperSearch takes considerably longer—around six and a half minutes—to analyze a smaller number of sources. In my test, it retrieved only four AI news items, three from The Guardian and one from BBC X, after querying 19 sources. While the responses are more detailed, they seem to be less comprehensive for news inquiries.

Since xAI hasn’t officially clarified the intended purpose of DeeperSearch, it remains uncertain whether news aggregation is its primary goal.

xAI is also quietly introducing a new image editing feature. Users can now modify uploaded images simply by describing the desired changes in text, similar to how Google’s Gemini models handle image editing. Although no official announcements have been made, users are beginning to notice an «Edit Image» button appearing on both the main X platform and in the Grok version for iOS.

Additionally, the company has announced that its image model, Aurora, is now accessible via the xAI API. Released in late 2024, Aurora is designed to produce photorealistic outcomes and has fewer restrictions than comparable tools—it can even generate images of politicians, a task that many other models cannot perform.
