Leaving Behind the Legends: A Veterans Journey from Bethesda to Indie Game Development

At the Game Developers Conference, Nathan Purkeypile, a former lead artist at Bethesda, shared his reasons for leaving the company after 14 years. He contributed to hit titles such as Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Fallout 4.

The designer departed from Bethesda in 2021 during the development of Starfield and ventured into the indie game scene. Purkeypile admitted, “I didn’t feel a strong urge to tackle another large AAA project and strive for the same achievements.” According to him, the success of Skyrim and Fallout was not solely due to talent but also favorable circumstances.

It is worth noting that Purkeypile recently released The Axis Unseen, a horror-action game featuring RPG elements and hunting simulation. While the project has not yet gained widespread popularity, it currently holds a “very positive” rating on Steam based on 228 reviews.
