Russia and China Push for Sanction Relief for Iran Amid Nuclear Diplomatic Efforts

Russia and China have called for the removal of sanctions on Iran and reaffirmed their support for Tehran’s assertion that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes, according to a joint statement issued following high-level discussions in Beijing on Friday.

During the talks, China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, amidst rising tensions over Iran’s uranium enrichment activities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently indicated that Iran had made substantial increases to its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% purity, which is just below the 90% threshold needed for weaponization.

In their joint statement, the three nations emphasized the importance of acknowledging Iran’s rights to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, while also denouncing unlawful unilateral sanctions.

Subsequently, Iran’s ambassador to China described the meeting as a “total success” and stated that the countries had resolved to “work together to counter” U.S. sanctions.

These discussions occurred shortly after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected what he referred to as “orders” from U.S. President Donald Trump to engage in negotiations for a new nuclear agreement or face military repercussions.

Since resuming his term in January, Trump has reactivated his “maximum pressure” strategy against Tehran, imposing stricter sanctions while calling for new talks. Iran insists that no agreement can be reached without the easing of sanctions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Friday that “further diplomatic efforts” regarding Iran’s nuclear program are essential and condemned sanctions against Tehran as “illegal.”

In recent years, Russia and Iran have bolstered their military partnership, with Tehran supplying drones utilized in the conflict in Ukraine as both nations contend with Western-imposed sanctions.
