U.S. and Russian Intelligence Leaders Reconnect to Foster Stability Amid Rising Tensions

The leaders of U.S. and Russian intelligence agencies held a phone call and reached an agreement to maintain ongoing communication aimed at reducing tensions between their nations, as reported by Russian state media on Wednesday.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), engaged in their conversation on Tuesday, marking the first significant high-level interaction in several years, according to the state-owned TASS news agency.

They «agreed to establish routine communication» between their respective agencies to «enhance global stability and security while mitigating confrontations in Moscow-Washington relations,» TASS indicated.

The discussion took place as Ukraine expressed support for a suggested 30-day ceasefire and signaled readiness to begin immediate negotiations with Russia during discussions in Saudi Arabia.

The most recent known interaction between the CIA and SVR leadership occurred in November 2022, when Naryshkin met with then-CIA Director William Burns in Ankara.
