Споры о будущем масштабирования Ethereum: Bутерин против L2-разработчиков Headline: Debates on the Future of Ethereum Scaling: Buterin vs. L2 Developers

Representatives from L2 projects commented on Vitalik Buterin’s statement regarding the need to shift the paradigm of ecosystem development. Previously, the co-founder of Ethereum described the concept of second-layer solutions as outdated.

Buterin pointed out that the transition of rollups to full decentralization (Stage 2) has proven to be more challenging and slower than anticipated. In his view, Ethereum itself is becoming more efficient, which necessitates that the extensions seek out new niches.

Developers of second-layer solutions acknowledged the need for evolution, but they had differing opinions on the role of scaling.

Stephen Goldfeder, co-founder of Offchain Labs, the developer of Arbitrum, took a firm stance, emphasizing that scaling should remain a core value of L2.

«Arbitrum was created not as a ‘service for Ethereum,’ but because Ethereum offers high security for transactions,» he highlighted.

Goldfeder dismissed the notion that the updated mainnet would replace the throughput of second-layer networks. He cited instances where Arbitrum and Base processed over 1,000 transactions per second while L1 metrics remained low. He warned that if Ethereum becomes «hostile» towards rollups, institutional players may start launching their own L1 networks.

Carl Fleischer from the Optimism Foundation supported the move toward decentralization but acknowledged technical hurdles.

Among the challenges he noted were lengthy withdrawal times, the lack of ready proof for Stage 2, and the insufficient tools for cross-chain applications. Fleischer endorsed the idea of native pre-compilations in Ethereum to facilitate the verification of rollups.

Jesse Pollak, head of Base, agreed with the assertion that L2 should not merely be a «cheap Ethereum.»

He mentioned that Base is focused on attracting developers and offering unique features such as account abstraction and privacy.

CEO of StarkWare Eli Ben-Sasson responded succinctly, implying that ZK rollups already align with Buterin’s new vision.

«Say Starknet without saying Starknet,» he posted on X.

Recall that on February 1, Buterin introduced a new model for incentivizing content creators, based on a blend of DAO and prediction market mechanics.
