Denmarks Intelligence Service Alerts to Potential Russian Interference in Greenlands 2025 Elections
Denmark’s intelligence agency (PET) announced on Friday that it is keeping an eye on potential Russian meddling in the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
«The authorities are closely observing the possible influence of foreign nations regarding the elections to the Inatsisartut scheduled for March 11, 2025,» PET stated in their announcement.
The agency pointed out that Russia aims to create rifts within NATO and perceives the growing influence of the United States in Greenland as a threat to its own interests.
In the weeks preceding the announcement of the election date for Greenland, PET detected numerous fraudulent social media accounts, including those impersonating Danish and Greenlandic politicians, which they indicated have contributed to societal division.
No direct connections to a foreign entity have been identified.
Earlier this month, Greenland’s parliament enacted legislation prohibiting anonymous and foreign donations to political parties, aimed at protecting against external interference.
In late December, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a desire to annex Greenland, a resource-abundant Arctic island rich in untapped minerals and oil reserves.
